‘We’re Living in a Literal Nightmare’: After the Second-Largest Landlord in the U.S. Took Over Arcata’s Woodridge Apartments, Tenants Say Their Living Standards — And Safety — Have Sharply Declined
The railings had been replaced, but they were no good. The old ones had been just fine — real wood, built to last. Time-tested and solid, could take a lean or a wayward bump. Now they were made from this pressurized crap that splintered when you put your hands on it.

Letter Writer Says Fortuna Is Headed for a Dead End Without Measure D
Remember opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect that of Redheaded Blackbelt nor have we checked the letters for accuracy. Fortuna has a critical road choice to make. It can go forward, or it can look backward and end up at a dead end. Fortuna’s Measure D, Fortuna Essential Services Funding, is a long overdue sales tax adjustment asking voter approval for a ¾ of a cent increase. This would bring the city in line with other county cities and unincorporated Humboldt County. Fortuna city services are stretched, such as police and safety, parks and recreation facilities, road repair, code enforcement, insurance coverage, and more. Nothing comes for free.

Humboldt County Just Approved Cutting 80 Redwoods Near Eureka, and Not Everyone Is Happy
Eighty redwoods on four acres outside Eureka are coming down, and the vote that cleared them happened with nearly half the Humboldt County Planning Commission missing. Commissioners approved the removal at their September 17 meeting by a 3-1 margin, with three of seven members absent. The trees sit within 300 feet of homes near the Mitchell and Lentell roads intersection, and the property owner said he wants them gone before one falls on his house. A neighbor added that his home gets almost no sun from winter into spring.
