Laurie Kuna, Vice President of Lowell Area Schools Board of Education, and Christine Beachler, Library Media Director, have received recognition from the Michigan Association of School Librarians (MASL). Kuna, a retired Lowell High School English teacher and author, has actively advocated for students' access to books and opposed censorship. Beachler, with 22 years of experience as a librarian, has worked hard to improve library services. The MASL, a body representing approximately 400 school librarians and educators in Michigan, named Beachler the 2023 District Library Director of the Year and Kuna the 2023 Outstanding Board of Education Member.
LAS Prepares for Next Round of Building Renovations
With the renovation of Lowell Middle School complete, officials at Lowell Area Schools say it’s time for the community to turn its attention to other district buildings. Administrators have put together a three-phase plan that spans the remainder of the decade and will result in more than $104 million in building and facility upgrades. The centerpiece of the plan is a complete renovation of Cherry Creek Elementary School which was originally built as a middle school.
