FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When the games really matter to reach Omaha is when Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn wants to be playing at Baum-Walker Stadium. It probably wasn't required Friday afternoon against Santa Clara, but it probably made a little bit of a difference.

Especially when the Broncos pitching fell apart in the fifth inning. They walked four batters and hit another one with a pitch for good measure. What usually happens in that situation, happened again. The Razorbacks got a couple of hits and a homer when the pitcher worries about that, score five more runs for a 10-3 lead.

"It was very uncharacteristic of our club," Santa Clara coach Rusty Filter said later. "I can’t remember the last time we have walked 10 batters and hit two."

The fans played a part in that. It was a packed house that waited a couple of innings to have a lot to cheer about and once they got it they mostly hung around to the end.

The Hogs are 31-4 after the win over the Broncos and now they have TCU on Saturday night, assuming the bad weather currently all around Fayetteville. It doesn't start until 8 p.m. (on ESPNU), but it could shove the games pretty close.

Left-hander Hagen Smith will be on the mound for the Hogs, so Van Horn wants this win to need just one more to advance to the Super Regional that would likely be at Baum-Walker, too. That is huge to get to Omaha, which is always the chief goal.
