Nor’easter threatens Delaware with 45-knot gusts, big waves

Delaware’s beaches are bracing for a rough stretch of weather. A developing nor’easter over the Atlantic is expected to bring strong winds and dangerous waves to the state’s coastal waters beginning Monday, Oct. 19, and lasting through midweek. Forecasters say waves could climb as high as 15 feet, with minor coastal flooding possible.

Good Monday morning, Delmarva! It’s a beautiful start to the week, and today is shaping up to be a crisp, sunny autumn day. Expect plenty of blue skies with a high near 63°F — perfect sweater weather! Do keep in mind that a north wind around 10 mph will be in play, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph at times, so hold onto your hats if you’re heading outdoors. Tonight, clouds will begin to filter back in, making it a partly cloudy evening. Temperatures will drop to a cool 48°F, so make sure you have a light jacket handy if you’re heading out after dark. Looking ahead to Tuesday, we’re in great shape! Mostly sunny skies return with a pleasant high of 68°F — arguably the nicest day of the stretch. Tuesday night stays mostly clear and cool, dipping back down to around 48°F. Overall, it’s a fantastic couple of days ahead for the Delmarva Peninsula. Coastal Flooding Expected Along Delaware Shorelines Through Wednesday Evening

Updated 2:40 AM Wednesday, Oct. 21. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect Wednesday for several areas across Delmarva, with minor tidal flooding likely to impact low-lying communities through 10 p.m. Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service out of Mount Holly has issued the advisory for Kent County, Inland Sussex County, and the Delaware Beaches. Residents can expect up to one foot of water above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The biggest concern is road flooding. Some of the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities — as well as areas along inland tidal waterways — could see partial or full closures as tide levels rise. Authorities are urging drivers to use extreme caution. Do not drive through floodwaters, as the water may be much deeper than it appears and could put you and your vehicle in serious danger. Also important: if you park near areas prone to tidal flooding, move your vehicle now to avoid costly damage. Looking ahead, the National Weather Service says additional elevated high tide cycles are expected beyond Wednesday — so this may not be a one-day concern for Delmarva residents.
