FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) — Down 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears exploded for four runs, then added six more in the sixth inning to defeat the Elkins Tigers, 11-2, at Mary Lou Retton Park.
Brody Whitehair doubled twice and drove in four runs for the Polar Bears, Gunner Riley scored three runs and Dominick Barone added two RBIs.
Matthew Masters pitched four innings of scoreless relief for Fairmont Senior and Brayden Gorby followed with three innings of 1-hit shutout ball for the win.
Fairmont Senior is at Buckhannon-Upshur in a matchup of 5-0 teams on Thursday at 5 p.m.
LEWIS COUNTY 7, Robert C. Byrd 3: After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Minutemen responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, then, after RCB got a run back in the top of the third, Lewis County tallied one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Nick George’s two-run home run gave RCB the advantage and Brayden Thomason added a triple for the Eagles.
Zachary James pitched a complete game, with all three runs earned to go with six hits.
For Lewis County, Trenton Hunt and James each doubled, Joey Aman was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and Drew Cayton scored two runs.
On Thursday, Lewis County visits Grafton at 5:30 p.m. and RCB (1-3) hosts Elkins at 6 p.m.
NORTH MARION 11, Philip Barbour 1 (F/5): The Huskies scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to extend an early 3-0 lead and Cole Malnick held the Colts to one unearned runs on one hit, striking out nine.
Malnick also finished a home run short of the cycle at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run and three RBIs.
Parker Kincell added two RBIs and two runs for North Marion, which is at Nicholas County on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Nick Gonzales singled in the third inning for Philip Barbour (1-3), which hosts Liberty on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
SOUTH HARRISON 13, Calhoun County 9: Riley Myers doubled, drove in two runs and scored two more for the Hawks, who scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth after trailing 6-5.
Alexis Shaw and Elexus Heckert added two hits each, with Heckert driving in two runs.
Shaw picked up the win with 5 1/3 innings of relief, giving up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
South Harrison (2-1) is at Gilmer County on Thursday at 5 p.m.
FAIRMONT SENIOR 11, Elkins 0 (F/5): Jessie Jenkins and Teresa Staron combined on a one-hit shutout for the Polar Bears, with Jenkins striking out eight in three innings.
Abigail Shuck had two RBIs and Jenkins scored three runs for Fairmont Senior (2-3).
The Polar Bears scored five runs in the first inning and three each in the second and third frames.
County foe North Marion is up next on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Rachel.
