FAIRHAVEN — When Justin Marques was asked to participate in this year’s A Shot for Life football game and fundraiser for cancer research, the Fairhaven High junior jumped at the opportunity.
The cause is especially close to Marques, whose grandfather, Paul Johnson, has battled cancer over the past few years.
Not only did Johnson have basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, removed from his shoulder and nostril, he also overcame prostate cancer two years ago thanks to 42 radiation treatments.
“It makes the purpose even bigger for me,” said Marques, Fairhaven High’s all-time touchdown leader with 68. “My grandfather had cancer recently, but he’s all good now.”
Marques said he knows how difficult it is to have someone close to you fighting cancer.
“My grandmother would always tell us how he was going through it and she would always update us,” he said.
A two-time Standard-Times Football Offensive Player of the Year, Marques will compete amongst other top football players in the state in a seven-on-seven all-star game for A Shot for Life on April 21 at St. Sebastian’s in Needham.
“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” said Marques, who led Fairhaven to the Div. 6 state championship last fall with a single-season record 38 touchdowns. “I’m looking forward to making relationships with the other athletes and coaches involved.”

To participate in A Shot for Life, a sports based non-profit organization that funds health and cancer research initiatives, Marques is asked to raise $1,000.
