John Carter set to be arraigned Monday on murder charges
A Fairfield man accused of murdering his fiancée in 2011 is scheduled to make his first court appearance next week.
John Carter's arraignment has been set for Monday at 10:30 a.m. Carter is accused of murdering Katelyn Markham in August 2011. He was arrested on Wednesday at his workplace in Forest Park.
Body camera footage from Forest Park Police shows a typical routine arrest. Carter appeared cooperative.
Carter was the last known person to see Katelyn alive in August 2011. He reported her missing. Katelyn's remains were found nearly two years later in a remote, wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana.
J. Ryan Green is a former private investigator who investigated Katelyn's disappearance and death. He said he interviewed Carter five times, and news of his arrest wasn't surprising.
"I'm not shocked at all," Green said. "One thing I remember about John is he acted as though he couldn't remember very well, and then he would remember things that I said or did from a year earlier."
Green said Carter declined to take a polygraph on several occasions.
"He only told me what he wanted me to know. He knew where the boundaries were, and if he didn't want to go any further, he said he couldn't remember any more," Green said.
Carter has spoken with WLWT multiple times over the last 12 years and has repeatedly denied killing Katelyn.
But, Katelyn's father, Dave Markham, said he's had his suspicions even during a moment when Carter hugged him during a service for Katelyn.
"That was awkward, and there were times like at that really candlelight vigil all just up the street, and he tried to pretend like he was crying, but there were no tears," Dave Markham said. "This needs to be a closing time for everybody."
Messages left for Carter's family and attorney have not been returned.
Last month, Carter's childhood friend, Jonathan Palmerton, was arrested and charged with perjury. Prosecutors said he lied under oath in connection to this investigation.
