Video captured a fight at a Virginia high school Wednesday where a BB gun ended up falling to the floor.
A parent who wants to remain anonymous sent WJLA a video his daughter filmed of a fight that he said happened at Annandale High School in Fairfax County. A gun is visible on the ground in the video.
The father said two teachers were punched trying to separate students.
The parent also sent WJLA a letter that he said was emailed by the principal about the incident. The letter doesn't mention anything about a fight but states the gun was a BB gun.
The letter reads as follows:
"Dear Families,
This morning, during the transition between first and second block, a BB gun fell out of a student’s backpack. The BB gun was seen and confiscated by a staff member who was standing outside the classroom, monitoring the hallway transition. Security was immediately notified. At no time was this BB gun used to intimidate other students or staff, and there was no threat of danger.
We are working with Fairfax County Police and our Office of Safety and Security to investigate, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in this case. BB guns look real, can cause minor injuries, and if a student is found in possession of one, are considered a violation of the Student Rights and Responsibilities.
As always, if your child shares a safety concern with you, the FCPS Office of Safety and Security has an anonymous safety tip line that you can access online, by texting “TIP FCPS” to 888-777, or by calling 571-423-2020. If it is an emergency, please call 911.
I am so proud that we were able to address this incident quickly and safely because our staff members prioritize being present in the hallways. In addition, students, staff and community members immediately informed members of our administration and security teams. I want to thank our staff and students for working together to uphold our Atoms Agreement of Safety.
Shawn DeRose, Principal"
Fairfax County Police Department said officers responded to the school around 8:52 a.m. after the BB gun was found. They added that the school security found the BB gun after the students fought in the hallway.
Fairfax County Public Schools also confirmed the presence of the BB gun following the fight during a "class change."
A student has been identified and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, FCPS said.
