Wright State baseball wins Horizon League Championship for 3rd straight year

DAYTON — The Wright State Raiders won the Horizon League Baseball Championship for the third straight season on Saturday afternoon.

They had to beat Oakland University twice at Nishwitz Stadium on the campus of Wright State University.

The Raiders won the first game, 9-8, and took the second game against the Grizzlies, 14-0.

WSU trailed, 6-3, but scored five straight runs to take an 8-6 lead in Game 1. Oakland scored twice in the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8.

Andrew Patrick led off the ninth inning for Wright State with a home run to give them the lead for good. Tristen Haught allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth but got the final three outs to win it.

The Raiders took control of the second game scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning. It was capped by a grand slam by Patrick to put WSU ahead, 5-0.

Wright State followed by scoring seven runs in the third inning. Gehrig Anglin hit a two-run double and Julian Greenwell’s two-run home run increased it to 13-0. Patrick’s RBI double in the sixth capped the scoring.

He drove in six runs for WSU in the second game.

Patrick was named the Horizon League Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He was among six Raiders to make the All-Tournament Team. The rest were Jay Luikart, Tristan Haught, Julian Greenwell, and Luke Stofel.

Haught held the Grizzlies to four hits in seven innings and had 11 strikeouts.

Wright State will find out who they play Monday afternoon in the regionals of the 2023 NCAA College Baseball Championship.
