Raleigh says housing, transportation bonds on ballot won't increase taxes. Is that true?
Raleigh wants voters to pass two bonds this election year totaling $203 million to fund transportation improvements and affordable housing. And the city has a convincing pitch: Unlike previous bonds, there would be no extra tax increase associated with these bonds. But that raises a question: If Raleigh isn’t asking voters to pay more in taxes to support the bonds, then how would the city be paying for them? The short answer is that taxpayers would still be paying — just in a different way. The long answer first requires knowledge of what a bond is, and why local governments have to ask voters to approve them. Alongside the bonds, there are 15 candidates for Raleigh City Council and the mayor on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election. In-person early voting runs from Oct. 15-31. What is a bond? When local governments place a bond on the ballot, they’re essentially asking voters for permission to borrow money. There are several kinds of bonds that a local government can ask voters to approve, according to the National Association of Bond Lawyers. Some require a local government to raise property owners’ taxes directly to back the loan. In this case, Raleigh

RDU's fastest-growing airline announces two more nonstops next summer
Breeze Airways will add two more nonstop destinations from Raleigh-Durham International Airport next summer, including its second international route from the Triangle. Breeze will begin flying between RDU and Buffalo, New York, on June 29. The low-cost carrier expects to operate those flights year-round, starting Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. The next day, June 30, Breeze will begin flying between RDU and Nassau in the Bahamas twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Those flights will be mostly year-round, with a pause during hurricane season. The airline will be the only one flying nonstop from RDU to the Bahamas, after BahamasAir discontinued its service to Freeport, Grand Bahama , in 2024. In 2025, Avelo Airlines announced flights to Nassau on Boeing 737s but canceled the route before service began because of poor sales. Breeze will succeed in part because it uses smaller planes, the Airbus A220-300 that seats 137 passengers, that the airline can fill and fly profitably, says Lukas Johnson, the chief commercial officer. Breeze has also established a track record in the Triangle, Johnson said, flying to more destinations from RDU than any other airline. “I think we’ve got the right product — plane, efficiency and presence,” he
