This week the University of Oregon baseball team will host a Super Regional for the first time since 2012.
It’s something not many expected but that the coaches, players and Duck fans are extremely excited for it.
Last month, the Ducks struggled to find consistency on the mound.
And with ace pitcher Jace Stoffal out with an injury, things were not looking too promising for the young bullpen.
Oregon dropped out of the top-25 rankings and went into the Pac-12 Tournament unsure if they would even make it to the post-season.
But after an unbelievable run in the conference tournament and strong regional play at the home of one of the most historical college baseball programs in the NCAA - thanks to the improvements by the pitching staff and strong performance at the plate, the Ducks are now in a position to make history with a chance to bring the program its first trip to the College World Series.
"We were just very candid with them and told them, 'Look, if you want to have your year up on that wall for your friends and family to see from here on out, that's up to you, and if you don't, then that's on you and that's on us as coaches, players, everybody,'” explained Ducks head coach Mark Wasikowski. “We are all a reflection of the 2023 team. If those numbers aren't on that wall, that means we didn't get it done."
"We kind of all understood,” said freshman pitcher Grayson Grinsell. “We really haven't had many conversations about it. I mean, we all understand what the situation is and really we just all have to step up, and we all have - and it's great to see."
"As hitters, we try and score as many runs as we can for them and the pitching’s job is to keep us in the game, keep us right there, and you know it's always a team effort," said senior shortstop Drew Cowley.
Game 1 of the Eugene Super Regional starts on Friday at 5 p.m. at PK Park.
