‘Armed and dangerous’ suspect surrenders after Euclid police shooting during traffic stop

EUCLID, Ohio (WOIO) - Euclid police say authorities took an “armed and dangerous” suspect in custody Wednesday after a second suspect was shot by an officer.

Officers say the 16-year-old Cleveland resident, turned himself in peacefully at the Euclid Police Department front window, after a manhunt that lasted for hours.

Around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of East 222nd and Fox Avenue, Euclid police say officers spotted and stopped a suspected stolen Hyundai Sonata.

During the traffic stop, an officer shot a 19-year-old man, according to police.

Police say the 19-year-old was transported to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.

His name has not been released.

A 14-year-old male passenger in the suspected stolen car was taken into custody without incident, but a third teen boy fled the scene on foot.

Police say he was considered “armed and dangerous.”

Shortly after he fled, police say he pointed a gun at a resident on Hartland Road.

The resident was not injured, but her boyfriend told 19 News it was frightening to hear what happened to his girlfriend who simply was walking out to their back yard

“The guy who was running from police hopped a fence and was in our neighbor’s backyard when my girlfriend was coming out of the back door,” the man said of the suspect. “He was rounding the garage and kind of stopped, shocked and then he pulled his gun out and pointed it at her. She took off back into the house and called 911.”

But, the man who did not want us to use his name for safety reasons, said the fear was real.

“It’s kind of frightening with a house full of kids,” he said.

Police responded immediately to Hartland Road, but the armed suspect took off again.

However, Euclid police say hours later he peacefully walked into the police department and surrendered.

A Euclid police detective suffered a non-gunshot-related injury to his leg during the ordeal and is being treated at a local hospital.

Agents with Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) have been called in to handle the investigation.
