ESSEX, MD—Police are on the scene of a barricade situation that is unfolding in the Essex area.

At around 11:45 a.m. on June 5, 2023, tactical teams, aviation, and marine units responded to the area of Sandalwood Road at S. Marlyn Avenue (21221).

Initial reports indicate that one subject is armed with a shotgun.

Sandalwood Elementary School and Deep Creek Middle School are both on lockout status, as a precaution.  Authorities say all students are safe.  Local roads are being shut down and residents are being urged to shelter-in-place.

Motorists should avoid the area.
