Oct 9-12 full closure on I-285 in Smyrna, S. Atlanta Road to SR 280/S. Cobb Drive
Work crews for the Georgia Department of Transportation will close all lanes on I-285 northbound and southbound between S. Atlanta Road and SR 280/S Cobb Drive in the cities of Atlanta and Smyrna, Fulton County, this weekend from 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 until 5 a.m. on Oct. 12. All traffic approaching the closures will be detoured to use I-75, I-75/I-85 Connector and I-20. The full closure is related to the I-285 Westside Rebuild concrete slab reconstruction and rehabilitation project currently ongoing from Collier Drive in Fulton County to Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County. The work includes improvements to the roadway shoulder lanes, the concrete median, signage, guardrail and ATMS/ITS systems. Weather permitting, these are the scheduled closures beginning at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 until 5 a.m. on Oct. 12: I-285 Northbound, all lanes closed to traffic between S. Atlanta Road (Exit 16) and S. Cobb Drive (Exit 15), I-285 Southbound and all lanes closed to traffic between S. Cobb Drive (Exit 15) and S. Atlanta Road (Exit 16). Planned Fairburn Road closure postponed, officials say
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A major road closure set for 8 a.m. Monday has been postponed, the South Fulton mayor’s office said Sunday. The planned closure of Fairburn Road in South Fulton at the North and South Utoy Creek crossings has been delayed due to “some technical and operational issues” that need to be resolved related to a water main in the area.

Work to start soon on final section of Highway 20 widening
Work is scheduled to begin in the coming months for the final section of the Highway 120 widening project, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced. GDOT awarded C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. a contract to widen Highway 20 from the Union Hill Road intersection to the East Cherokee Drive intersection. The $61.1 million project is projected to begin in the next two months, GDOT representatives said. This sixth and final phase of the widening project will span about 4.2 miles and is expected to be completed in 2031. It's part of the larger Highway 20 widening project that began in 2020. The project stretches from Interstate 575 in Canton to North Corners Parkway in Forsyth County. C.W. Matthews Contracting CO, Inc. is also widening Highway 20 from East Cherokee Drive to Highway 369. The 2.4 mile-project is scheduled to be completed July 31, 2029. GDOT began widening Highway 20 from Highway 369 to Post Road in 2025. This phase of the widening project is expected to be completed in late 2028.
