CARDIFF, Calif. — A bluff collapsed Thursday in the Cardiff area.
The bluff collapse, which occurred at San Elijo State Beach between 1-1:30 p.m., was around 30-40 feet wide, California State Parks confirmed to FOX 5. SkyFOX was over the scene where large amount of rocks and dirt were found piled onto the shoreline.
There were no injuries reported from the incident.
“It’s just a matter of time. We’ve grown up in this area. We used to live over in Leucadia 25 years ago so we’re always aware of the cliffs erosion and unfortunately it seems to happen more and more. We just need to make people aware,” said Dale Hershey, a resident of Encinitas.
Visitors are advised to not use the staircase to the north beach area, park officials said. The north day-use parking is also closed out of an abundance of caution.
“Yeah it’s kind of crazy. I’m just glad it didn’t happen on a day where there’s a lot of people out. It could’ve been a lot worse,” said Caden Eyler, a local surfer. “The number one issue is safety, the nature of how it was.”
California State Park specialists are currently assessing the Bluff collapse. Officials stated, “State Parks encourages all visitors to be mindful of their surroundings when visiting and keep a safe distance from the bluffs.”
