Ely baseball goes 2-2 in four-game stretch

ELY—The Ely baseball team has been busy on the diamond the past five days. Over the weekend the Wolves were in Southern Minnesota playing Section 1A stalwarts Kenyon-Wanamingo and Hayfield.

In Kenyon, the Wolves gave up a 4-1 lead, giving up two in the sixth and one in the seventh to allow the game to go to extra innings where they would ultimately fall 5-4.

Drew Marolt threw a six inning no-hitter giving up three unearned runs all on errors while Caid Chittum took the loss giving up two runs in the seventh and the eventual winner in the eighth, both on Ely errors.

Drew Marolt led Ely at the plate goin 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

In Hayfield, the Wolves rallied scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 5-4 Hayfield lead, eventually coming away with the 7-5 win.

With the help of two Hayfield errors, Ely scored runs on hits by Drew Johnson and Caid Chittum. Owen Marolt got the win with one inning in relief of Jack Davies, who pitched 3 innings, giving up three runs and finished with two strikeouts. Elliot Levens pitched two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two hit batters. He struck out two.

Ely got eight hits with Levens, Zander Lislegard and Deegan Richards driving in runs for the Wolves.

On Monday, Ely hosted unbeaten Silver Bay and lost 8-4 to the Mariners. A five-run fifth inning for the Mariners sealed the win as they capitalized on three hits and three Ely errors.

Hunter Hallbakken took the loss for Ely, pitching four-plus innings while giving up five runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked five. Chittum and Drew Marolt had run-scoring hits for Ely in the loss.

On Tuesday, the Wolves traveled to Cook to face North Woods and came away with 5-1 win over the Grizzlies.

Grizzlies starter Louis Panichi held the Wolves at bay for 4.2 innings, striking out 10 and allowing two runs on six walks and one hit.

Ely used two suicide bunts to score three runs in the seventh to pull ahead 5-1.

Ely Freshman Owen Marolt pitched a complete game for Ely. Marolt gave up three hits while striking out eight and only walking two North Woods hitters.

After the last four games in five days, Ely evened their record to 3-3. They’ll travel to Deer River on Thursday.
