Brock Nelson becomes latest Islanders’ injury worry

The Islanders have survived without Mathew Barzal. Now they may need to do so without another star.

Brock Nelson exited the Islanders’ 7-2 win over the Maple Leafs late in the first period after taking a hit from Toronto’s Noel Acciari in the corner.

Nelson crumpled in a heap after the hit and stayed down for a minute or so before skating off and going up the tunnel.

Coach Lane Lambert did not have an update on Nelson’s status when asked after the game.

He did not return for the start of the second period.

Nelson’s 65 points this season lead the Islanders, with Barzal’s 51 in second place. (Bo Horvat has 63, but the first 54 were with the Canucks).

As for Barzal, it is not clear if or when he will return this season.

Lane Lambert said Tuesday morning he remained hopeful despite Barzal not having skated on his own as of yet.
