An 80-year-old Elma man died Monday after his vehicle crossed the centerline on U.S. Highway 12 in Grays Harbor County and collided with a logging truck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Allan B. Kalar was traveling west near milepost 29 at about 1 p.m. Monday when his 2002 Ford Taurus crossed the centerline and struck a 1990 logging truck driven by Shannon J. Toso, 51, of Morton. Kalar’s vehicle came to a rest in the eastbound ditch while the logging truck came to rest on the westbound shoulder.

Kalar was declared dead after being transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Toso was injured in the crash but refused aid, according to the state patrol.

The state patrol listed the cause of the crash as failure to maintain lane. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

According to the state patrol, it’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
