As we start a new month there is certainly no shortage of things to do around Maine this weekend. The Easter Bunny will be busy hopping around Maine this weekend, making an appearance at some Easter egg hunts, and some other events going on this weekend are the State of Maine Sportsman's Show and the Great Home Expo. There are also craft fairs and a seed swap, and if you want to see if Maine can break the record for the largest ice carousel, then you will want to head to Long Lake this weekend.

With the final weekend of March upon us, there are plenty of activities to choose from this weekend. It is Maine Maple Weekend, so you can take a tour of a local sugarhouse and see how your maple syrup is produced. I am also working on a separate article about Maine Maple Weekend, which should be coming out shortly. This weekend is also the Maine Science Festival in Bangor, so there are lots of kid-friendly events this weekend. Enjoy the weekend.

On Friday, March 10th, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 10-year-old student of Monroe Elementary School had been arrested for bringing a gun to school. While the details of the arrest have not been released, the case is currently under investigation. We know that nobody was hurt and the police arrived at the school a little before 9 AM on Friday after they received a call that a student had a firearm.

The Mount Desert Island Regional School System board is considering a proposal that would see elementary school students released 90 minutes early on 24 Wednesdays in the next academic year. Some parents are concerned about the impact this will have on their children's learning, not to mention the scheduling conflicts for working parents to find child care during these early release days. Supporters of the proposal see it as a necessary measure to improve education quality for children who need it the most.
