Elgin police arrest suspect in deadly shooting that killed two people

ELGIN, Texas — A man is in custody for allegedly shooting and killing two people in Elgin on March 27. 

At around 11 p.m. on March 27, officers with the Elgin Police Department responded to a shooting in the 800 block of S. Martin Luther King Blvd. When they arrived, they found 43-year-old Crystal D. Fitzgerald and 45-year-old Reggie W. Smith with apparent gunshot wounds. 

First responders were called in to perform life-saving measures, but Fitzgerald and Smith were pronounced dead at the scene.

Elgin police later identified 35-year-old Terrence Wayne Lewis as the suspect. Lewis has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to police, he could also receive higher charges as they continue to investigate.

At around noon on March 31, Lewis was arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Lone Star Fugitive Task Force after EPD requested their assistance in locating him. Lewis was found in the 6100 block of Fairway Street in southeast Austin. 

Following his arrest, Lewis was transferred into EPD's custody. He is currently being held in the Bastrop County Jail.
