WICHITA COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A man who was involved in a three-vehicle wreck on U.S. 287 near Electra last May that killed a one-year-old is now in jail on $300,000 bond on a charge of manslaughter.

Michael Lloyd Carlson of Knox County was jailed today in Wichita County.

On May 17, 2023, an earlier rollover crash near Midway Church Road closed both northbound lanes of the highway.

The DPS said Carlson was going north in the left lane and moved into the right lane as he approached the detour for the other wreck.

An SUV with two adults and their two young children from Dallas was ahead of him and was slowing because of the other wreck. Investigators said Carlson’s pickup slammed into the rear of the SUV, causing it to slam into the back of a semi-trailer rig.

One-year-old Aveline Hill suffered severe injuries and died the next day at Cook Children’s Medical Center. The mother and driver of the SUV, Jeanette Hill, and her four-year-old son were taken to the hospital for incapacitating injuries. Carlson was treated and released at the scene.

The victim’s parents filed a lawsuit last November against Carlson alleging gross negligence on his part, claiming he made an unsafe lane change, failed to control his speed, or timely apply his brakes.

A jury trial is on the docket for that suit next January.
