Kids can get free eye exams & glasses at Baltimore County libraries this summer. Here's how
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Public Library is partnering with the nonprofit Vision to Learn to provide free eye exams and eyeglasses to children in need over the summer.It's the sixth year the library is offering the partnership."Libraries are more than just places to borrow books; we are community hubs where everyone can access the resources they need to succeed. This includes offering this essential vision service, to ensure every child has clear vision heading into the new school year," BCPL CEO Sonia Alcántara-Antoine said in a statement.Vision To Learn's mobile clinic will visit 17 branches between June 18 and August 19. Any child 17 and under can get an appointment. Participants will need to identify and verbalize basic shapes in the exam.If a child is determined to need corrective glasses, they'll be examined by an optometrist and eventually pick from a large selection of frames.Pre-registration is required. To participate, schedule an appointment between 9 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Each appointment is 10 to 15 minutes and includes an exam and, if needed, glasses selection.Each mobile clinic visit location and date is listed in the image below:
HOCO Pride event celebrated by hundreds in Columbia
BALTIMORE -- The annual HOCO Pride event at Color Burst Park in Columbia included drag story time, vendors, games and a pet parade. The Pride event on Sunday was catered toward families, children and pets, according to Abby Hendrix, COO of HOCO Pride."We want to make sure our spaces are safe for all people," Hendrix said. Student arrested after loaded gun recovered at Franklin High School in Reisterstown
BALTIMORE - A student was arrested after a loaded gun was found Monday afternoon at Franklin High School in Reisterstown.Baltimore County Police said the 17-year-old was removed from the school and was taken into custody. He will be charged as an adult.The school's principal sent a letter to parents and guardians that they received a report of a student who may be in possession of a firearm. The School Resource Office and school officials located the teen, searched him and recovered the gun."We are deeply disappointed by the reckless actions of this student," Franklin High principal Kieran O'Connell said in the letter. "As with this case, it is important for all of us – students and parents alike – to inform school staff or police any time you or your child sees, hears, or reads anything that is suspicious or that may pose a threat to the school or its students. We all have a role to play in ensuring that our school remains a safe and secure learning environment for our children."The student, who has not been identified, was held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention facing charges of possession of a firearm.
Investigation underway after a man was shot and killed in Reisterstown
Police are investigating a homicide in Reisterstown Sunday. It happened in the 200 block of Hammershire Road. When officers got there, they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound.
