Update 1:37 p.m.: According to the ECSO, deputies were dispatched around 8:40 p.m.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Martin, of Ellabell, was attempting to pass a semi traveling west when it struck a passenger car head-on that was traveling east. The resulting collision led to Martin dying at the scene.
Martin’s wife, who was riding a separate motorcycle, crashed due to the debris from the initial impact and was taken to the hospital.
The driver of the passenger car was also taken to the hospital.
Two other passengers were in the car and complained of minor injuries. The semi driver was uninjured.
This crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say one man is dead following a motorcycle crash overnight in Effingham County.

Highway 80 was shut down for several hours, from Meldrim Road to Highway 17. Officials first reported the crash at 9:30 p.m. The roads reopened just before 2 a.m.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
