Late Sunday night, a US flag and POW flag were stolen from the Veteran Foreign Wars Post in Edwardsburg.
Monday Morning, The Edwardsburg VFW looked out to see an empty flagpole.
This comes just days after Memorial Day, and members of the post are very upset.
“I came in yesterday to do a little bit of maintenance in the backyard, and when I came out, I heard the snaps of what hold the flag in place banging against the pole and I looked over there and I noticed the flags were gone,” said David Dudley, V.F.W. Post 2284 Commander.
When the Commander noticed them missing, his first question was why.
There are cameras at the VFW but none facing the flag.
And many cars use their parking lot to turn around, so catching the thief by camera is unlikely.
“Shock and anger honestly, I mean who would want to do that one to our country into the ones that are still missing. You know what the POW but also at the VFW I mean we are all about veterans and helping the community and to just take that was just anger, shock, and disbelief,” said Angie Edge, President of the Auxiliary and the Accountant.
Replacement flags have been put up at a cost of nearly $100.
The VFW is still hoping the thief will come forward, not just because of the monetary value, but because the flags represent all veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“If he or she is watching, please take the flags back and turn yourself in and make it right,” said Bill Rauch, Veteran & Past Commander of Edwardsburg American Legion.
The VFW is urging the person who took the flags to come forward.
That way, the US flag can be retired properly.
