If you were walking, biking or driving past Lynnwood Elementary School on a sunny Saturday morning last June, you might have seen a curious sight — kids, parents, dogs, face painters, an ice cream truck and more — all excited to be at school on a weekend! Why were they there and why were they so happy about it? It was the event that satisfies the “need for speed” for kids of all abilities — the Rotary Challenge Series Race — and registration is now open for this year’s event! My grandson and I have been part of the event since the beginning and we look forward to it every year.

The 2024 City of Edmonds budget season is just around the corner, and the Edmonds City Council wants to hear from the community how to prioritize city spending. The process started in April at a budget retreat for city staff, the mayor and councilmembers. Last month, the council approved the 2024 budget planning calendar and now will turn its focus to identifying priorities for the 2024 budget. The council plans to communicate these priorities to the mayor and city staff in July, as their work begins on building the budget.

I have requested that My Edmonds News post my May 16, 2023 email to the Edmonds City Council below. Since the May 15 meeting, the concerns of the gentlemen who expressed concern about being taxed out of his home has weighed heavy on me. My concern is that residents who have lived in Edmonds for generations, helped build this beautiful city and community, have paid their taxes in support of our schools, roads, parks, police and fire departments are now on their way to becoming homeless themselves. All in the name of helping city and county projects such as the hotel purchased to house the homeless on Highway 99. I am overwhelmed with concern for our elderly, tax-paying homeowners. Pushing victimhood, the homeless, has created financial opportunity for others at the expense of the very fabric, the backbone, of Edmonds. Empathy for some is becoming the path to cruelty for another group of people — again, these arethe fabric and foundation of Edmonds. Is this elder abuse?
