As visitors begin to crowd Oklahoma lakes for Memorial Day weekend, authorities are trying to remind lake-goers of ways to remain safe.

Edmond Fire Department Chief Chris Denton said to keep an eye on children and always keep water and whistles in the boat incase of an emergency.

Denton said on average, Arcadia Lake has one drowning every Memorial Day weekend.

Denton said he recommends stocking boats with bottled water and whistles for emergencies.

Edmond authorities will also be out on the water looking for excessive drinkers.

“You will see police boats and fire bats patrolling the area looking for monitoring the water," Denton said. "Remember, alcohol and the heat don’t mix, stay sober and have fun."

Arcadia Lake allows 150 boats on the water, but Sunday is expected to be the busiest day.
