Edgewater officer hurt in crash while backing up sheriff’s deputy

Crash occurred at US-1, Roberts Road intersection

EDGEWATER, Fla. – An Edgewater police officer was hospitalized after a crash Friday night that happened as they were responding to back up a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy, according to the Edgewater Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 (Ridgewood Avenue) and Roberts Road, troopers said. According to police, the officer had their lights and siren activated at the time of the crash, which FHP described as involving the officer’s marked patrol vehicle and a 2015 Ford Mustang.

The officer was hospitalized for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries while the Mustang’s driver — a 48-year-old Titusville man — remained at the scene and was not transported despite also suffering injuries to some degree.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was en route to a reported burglary in progress in the area of Hann Street, yet no burglary was found once units got there.
