At UNC, heavy police response conflicts with promise to keep students 'safe'
Tuesday morning, police at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, acting at the behest of administrators, broke up an encampment of students protesting Israel’s war in Gaza. They arrested several students. Almost like understudies in a repertory theatre company, both sides in this drama seem to be...
Lexington’s Frankie Frelick readies for final postseason run with No. 5 Duke softball
Frankie Frelick might be done with Duke University classes for good, but the Lexington native still has a chance to expand her list of college achievements. A senior catcher and utility player for the Duke softball team, the 22-year-old Frelick wants to extend her college softball career for as long as possible. Ranked No. 5 in the most recent USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, the Blue Devils (44-6, 20-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) host the ACC Tournament May 8-11. Winning the conference tournament guarantees a spot in the NCAA Tournament and a high seed. Even if the Blue Devils don’t win, they’d likely make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection, the program’s fourth straight postseason trip.
Diamond Heels benefit from no weekend games, climb in coaches poll
Even when the North Carolina Tar Heels aren’t playing baseball, they’re still winning. I know, I know. It sounds cheesy, but it’s the truth. UNC had a rare break in its schedule over the weekend, as student-athletes hit the books for final exams. North Carolina has been playing exceptional baseball this season, leading the ACC Coastal Division by three games over archrival Duke, with some brief time off well-deserved. The Tar Heels make their highly-anticipated return to the field on Tuesday, May 7, hosting Campbell in a rematch, to kick off their final regular-season homestand at Boshamer Stadium. With UNC dormant over the weekend and just a couple weeks out from ACC Tournament action, it jumped one spot to 12th in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll. After welcoming the Camels to Chapel Hill tomorrow, North Carolina (35-11, 17-7) hosts Louisville this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Cardinals (29-18, 13-11), winners of four straight, clinched their spot in the ACC Tournament on Sunday. Sophomore Year: 2021-2022
Sophomore year saw a near return to normalcy, sweeping changes to the housing system and an unforgettable basketball season. The first day of classes was filled with excitement and anticipation as a fully-populated student body flooded quads and lecture halls for the first time in two years. This was short-lived — in response to over 300 undergraduates testing positive for COVID-19 in late August, Duke allowed professors to move classes back online for two weeks.
Former UNC football offensive lineman finds new home in transfer portal
The North Carolina Tar Heels continue to prep for the 2024 season as spring practices have officially wrapped up. With the end of practices, the transfer portal is still very active as the Tar Heels were able to land a pair of recruits including bringing back a former quarterback. But they have also seen the departure of a few players. And on Monday a former player has found a new home. Offensive tackle DJ Geth posted on Instagram that he has committed to Liberty, finding his next program out of the portal. He posted this message to his personal account, making it official: View this post on Instagram A post shared by DJ Geth (@dj.k1ng) The offensive tackle is a former three-star recruit out of Roebuck, South Carolina who committed as part of the 2023 recruiting class. He lasted just one year but did not appear in any games. From there, he decided it was better to hit the transfer portal as the depth on the line, especially tackle, might have been too much for him to see playing time. UNC softball’s opening round ACC Tournament opponent announced
It seems like college spring sports started yesterday. Yet, we’re already here in May and the postseason is rapidly approaching. One college spring sports program that faced a lot of early uncertainty was the UNC softball program. North Carolina saw its longtime head coach, Donna J. Papa, retire after 38 seasons. The Tar Heels saw a couple players transfer, plus it brought in a few. UNC experienced all this with one goal in mind: make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. North Carolina crossed a major step off its goal list, recently clinching a spot in the ACC Softball Tournament. To...
