Duke Basketball One-And-Done Set to Work Out for Warriors

Golden State appears interested in Duke basketball talent Dereck Lively II.

Some recent mock drafts have Dereck Lively II coming off the board as a late lottery pick at the NBA Draft on June 22. Still, others see the long-limbed Duke basketball one-and-done sliding to the second half of the first round.

So perhaps he will still be available when the Golden State Warriors are on the clock at No. 19. It sounds like the six-time NBA champions might be looking to use their lone first-round pick to snag a backup to veteran big man Kevon Looney.

And according to a tweet on Friday afternoon from NBA reporter Jason Dumas, the Warriors have invited Lively to California to work out for them on Monday.

The 7-foot-1, 230-pound center, whose wingspan measured 7-foot-7 at the NBA Combine in mid-May, averaged only 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds for the 2022-23 Blue Devils after arriving in Durham as the No. 1 recruit in the country out of Westtown School in Pennsylvania.

However, he emerged as a brilliant rim protector and full-time starter late in the season for a squad that finished 27-9 overall and won the ACC Tournament. His eye-catching stat was his 2.4 blocks in only 20.6 minutes per game.

Then last week at Klutch Sports Group's pro day, Dereck Lively II showed off his 3-point stroke, despite going only 2-for-13 from downtown as a Blue Devil. At one point in that workout, the 19-year-old knocked down 14 straight corner threes in front of scouts from all 30 NBA teams.

Lively is one of two Duke basketball products who are sure to hear their names on draft night this year. The other is fellow one-and-done Dariq Whitehead, also a projected first-round pick.
