More than 50 residents displaced after three-alarm fire tears through Dracut apartment building

DRACUT — More than 50 residents were displaced after a large fire tore through a Dracut apartment building Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the 24-unit apartment building on Merrill Lane at approximately 9:14 p.m. Responding crews arrived to find heavy fire emitting from a second-floor apartment.

While the fire was contained to the second floor, third floor and attic, all residents had to be displaced because the power to the building was cut. The American Red Cross is assisting all the displaced residents.

A firefighter was injured after when part of the ceiling collapsed onto their shoulder.

First responders also rescued two cats from the burning building.

The fire was finally extinguished shortly after 10:30 p.m. after a third alarm was struck to bring more manpower to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
