The fire at the apartment building, located at 200 Merrill Lane in Dracut, was reported around 9:14 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, according to the Dracut Fire Department. Heavy fire had broken out from a second-floor apartment towards the back of the building.

Dracut firefighters and police evacuated all of the building's residents and rescued two cats.

Water hoses were brought in through the front and back of the building, but the fire raged up from the second floor into the third floor and the attack.

A third alarm sent additional fire responders to the scene, and the fire was extinguished around 10:35 p.m.

The fire was stopped before it could damage all of the building, but power to the structure was cut, causing all residents to be evacuated.

Firefighters remained on the scene after the blaze was extinguished to ensure no hot spots remained, and to overhaul the structure.

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts assisted with helping the displaced residents. Firefighters from Lowell, Tyngsborough, Methuen, Lawrence, Pelham, and Hudson provided mutual aid.

The injured firefighter was transported to Lowell General Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Dracut Fire Department.
