Morris/Sussex football: Final Top 10 rankings of the 2023 season
A terrific football season in Morris and Sussex counties has come to an end. In the end, three area teams won sectional titles and two teams reached state finals in their group. Programs set new school records and half a dozen schools won division titles in the Super Football Conference.
Leach scores 22, Fairfield beats Rider 88-81
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (AP) — Jalen Leach had 22 points in Fairfield’s 88-81 victory against Rider on Sunday. Leach shot 7 of 11 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line for the Stags (2-6, 1-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Peyton Smith scored 16 points while shooting 4 of 6 from the field and 8 for 10 from the line, and added 10 rebounds and five blocks. Jasper Floyd had 15 points and shot 3 of 5 from the field and 8 for 8 from the line.
Newton Bowling Team Heads to the Lanes for New Season, Wins First Match
NEWTON, NJ— The Newton High School bowling team, under the coaching of John Zwitkowits is hitting the lanes for the upcoming season. “I'm excited for this year,” said Zwitkowits. “Hoping for a top five finish but aiming for a top three finish.” They began their season with a win against High Point on Wednesday, winning 5-2. Braves’ high game scores: Rachel Porzilli- 451 Salvatore Serillo 449 Brad Williams- 434 Devlin Schmid- 389 Cera Steinwand- 383 There are seven key returners on the team this year including seniors Rachel Porzilli and Mackenzie Genung. The remaining returning players are sophomores Salvatore Serillo, Brad Williams, Devlin Schmid, Cera Steinwand, and Lukas Straub. The team lost one bowler Vinsent Mabee to graduation, but gained newcomer, freshman Kaitlyn Steinwand. “My sophomores made great strides last year. They love the sport and our success will ride on how much they improve throughout the year. My two seniors can surprise the league as well. They have great potential,” Zwitkowits said. Last year's record for the Newton High School bowling team was 7-20. They start their season with a 1-0 overall and NJAC-Northern division record. Their next match will be away against Jefferson on Wednesday, December 6.
Local Hero Kelsey Carr Powers Seton Hall to BIG EAST Championship After Injury Comeback
Kelsey Carr, a junior player for the Seton Hall softball team, returned to play after a shoulder injury sidelined her in the previous season. In the 2023 season, Carr's performance helped the Pirates finish 42-18 and win the BIG EAST Tournament Championship, a feat not achieved since 2005. Seton Hall head coach Angie Churchill credits Carr's success to her growth during her injury rehab.

The West Morris Central football team are back-to- back-to- back group 3 champions. Winning a sectional title is an accomplishment that just gets more and more impressive after each season; however, this year’s title run might be the best out of any of them. After a 2-0 start to the season, The Wolfpack went on to lose five of their next seven games to close out the season, squeaking into the playoffs as the sixth seed with a 4-5 record.
Michael Salvatelli is the New Head Boys Basketball Coach at Glen Ridge High
GLEN RIDGE, NJ--The Glen Ridge High boys' basketball team will begin the 2023-2024 season with a new head coach, but certainly an already familiar face. Michael Salvatelli succeeds Rich Kennedy as head coach. Salvatelli has been coaching basketball as an assistant to Kennedy, and prior to that, Liam Carr, at GR. Salvatelli is also a Ridger alum, and played for the program. "This is a great experience for me, as a former player and now the head coach," said Salvatelli, who is also a health and physical education teacher at Glen Ridge High. Par2Play Indoor Golf Facility Opens in Franklin
SOMERSET, NJ - It's tee time in Franklin. Par2Play celebrated it's grand opening on Thursday night with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring local business leaders and elected officials. "It's high-tech, it's comfortable and the staff is just so friendly," Franklin Mayor Phillip Kramer said. "I'm thrilled to be here tonight." Par2Play is the newest indoor simulated golf facility to open in Somerset County. The venue features climate-controlled simulator bays, HDTVs, and an event space suitable for gatherings of six to 40 guests. Patrons can also sign up for golf lessons from PGA level instructors. The Franklin Township Chamber of Commerce hosted the sold-out event at 695 Hamilton Street. "I had my birthday party here, it was great," FTCC Vice President William "Bill" Grippo said. "We had 50 people, I recommend if you're going ot have a party have it here."
'25 RB Nolan James Jr. commits to Boston College
Boston College is still working on the Class of '24, as National Signing Day is approaching, but Jeff Hafley and his staff just landed their first pledge for the Class of '25. Nolan James Jr. a running back out of DePaul Catholic in New Jersey announced on Saturday evening that he has pledged to the Eagles. A 5-11 200 pound back he held offers from BC, Syracuse, UConn, Liberty, Buffalo and UMass and does not currently have a ranking yet from 247sports.

The Morris Hills Boys Cross Country team once again delivered an amazing 2023 Fall campaign. With amazing performances throughout the season, the team finished their Conference Dual Meet Season undefeated, earning the title of NJAC National Division Champions. Though the team will miss the leadership of seniors Shaun Andreazza, Charles Champagne, Shane Corcoran, Ishan Gajjar, Aidan Johnson, Nisval Patel, Lino Piazzi, Stephen Vadillo, and Garvin Varneckas, they hope to put forth another impressive campaign next season under Coach Mein.
