NYC 3-K And Pre-K Applications Are Now Open — Here Is Everything Parents Need To Know To Secure Guaranteed Acceptance For Little Learners

In New York City , milestones come in all shapes and sizes—and for 3- and 4-year-olds, they sometimes happen on a subway platform . City kids can tap an OMNY card before they can tie their shoes , pronounce dinosaur names that stump adults thanks to afternoons (or sleepovers ) spent at the Museum of Natural History , and navigate a crowded sidewalk like seasoned pros. As these tiny New Yorkers grow more independent , one big milestone looms large for families: their little learners starting school. Last week, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced major new investments in early childhood education —expanding free child care for 2-year-olds and moving New York City closer to universal 3-K and Pre-K , with a focus on easing costs for families and widening access where it’s needed most. For parents of soon-to-be 3- and 4-year-olds, the next big step is official: applications for the 2026–27 school year are open. Whether you’re clicking through online , calling it in, or stopping by a Family Welcome Center , enrolling your little New Yorker is just a few taps (or a stroller walk) away. For more information and to apply online , visit the

New York teachers stunned to learn some students can’t read time on old clocks after phone ban comes into play

New York City teachers say the state’s recently implemented cell phone ban in schools has showed that numerous students no longer know how to tell time on an old-fashioned clock. “That's a major skill that they're not used to at all,” Tiana Millen, an assistant principal at Cardozo High School in Queens, told Gothamist of what she’s noticed after the ban , which went into effect in September. Students in the city’s school system are meant to learn basic time-telling skills in the first and second grade, according to officials, though it appears children have fallen out of practice doing so in an increasingly digital world . “The constant refrain is ‘Miss, what time is it?’ Madi Mornhinweg, an English teacher in Manhattan , added in an interview with the outlet. “It’s a source of frustration because everyone wants to know how many minutes are left in class. … It finally got to the point where we I started saying ‘Where’s the big hand and where’s the little hand?’” Students and teachers alike say they’ve seen a drastic change in school culture since the phone ban, supported by Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York City teacher’s union, went into

Zohran Mamdani taps Kamar Samuels as next NYC schools chancellor: sources

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is set to name a Manhattan superintendent who worked to dismantle Gifted & Talented programs as his next schools chancellor, The Post has confirmed. Kamar Samuels, a longtime educator who currently works in Manhattan’s District 3, will take over the largest school system in the country with more than 900,000 students and 135,000 employees come Jan. 1. Manhattan superintendent Kamar Samuels is set to be named by Zohran Mamdani as his next schools chancellor. District3Supt/ X During his six-year stint as superintendent, Samuels promoted racial diversity in the classroom via school mergers in the district that covers parts of Harlem, the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights, according to Chalkbeat . He also focused on chipping away at the controversial Gifted & Talented program, which teachers’ unions claim is racially biased . Samuels instead opted to use the International Baccalaureate Organization, which he found “aligned with [his] philosophy” of expanding opportunities for all students while also investing in teachers. Stefanik hits Hochul for Qatar-funded curriculum and teacher material in NYC that allegedly twists history of 9/11

Rep. Elise Stefanik is demanding Gov. Kathy Hochul provide transparency about curriculum and teaching materials funded by Qatar or “malign domestic actors” being used in New York schools, including material that she believes distorts the history of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks . Stefanik (R-NY), who is running against Hochul (D) in next year’s election, contended that because the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) has refused to release the curriculum, the governor needs to step in. “The [NYC] DOE has refused to provide copies of teaching materials that twist the narratives of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and the Hamas-led massacre on October 7, 2023, in Israel,” Stefanik wrote in the letter obtained by The Post. Rep. Elise Stefanik ripped into NYC DOE for not handing over the curriculum and teaching materials in question and demanding Gov. Kathy Hochul step in. Pool/ABACA/Shutterstock Stefanik raised concerns about curriculum and other content funded by Qatar and teaching materials from “malign domestic actors” that could give students a distorted view of 9/11. The New York rep pointed to $1 million in funding from Qatar Foundation International that went to P.S. 261, an elementary school in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn,
