(WTVY) - Two big changes are coming to the ACT standardized test, according to an official statement released in July from Janet Godwin, the CEO of ACT.After the ACT Enrollment Management Summit, a gathering of admissions and enrollment professionals in higher education, Godwin and her staff decided that flexibility and test length both needed to be addressed.To address flexibility, the ACT will no longer require the science section beginning in Spring 2025. Instead, the science section of the test will be offered as an additional, optional section.Historically, the ACT has acted as an achievement test for college admissions. Before the July announcement, the ACT was comprised of four distinct tests: English, Math, Reading and Science. Along with the required segments, an optional essay section was also included.The original ACT was first released in 1959. In 1989, the “enhanced ACT” replaced the Natural Science section with Science Reasoning. This was a move towards de-emphasizing specific scientific knowledge and instead just testing core analytical and problem-solving skills. Moving forward, students can choose whether to include or omit the science section during their test, mirroring the already-optional essay section.“This means students can choose to take the ACT, the ACT plus science, the ACT plus writing, or the ACT plus science and writing. With this flexibility, students can focus on their strengths and showcase their abilities in the best possible way,” Godwin said.Not only is the science section now optional, but the test is shorter, too.The length of the Spring 2025 ACT is reduced by up to one-third, depending on which version students take. Without the required science section, along with shorter passages on the reading and English sections and fewer questions in each section, the new core test will last only two hours. Before the new changes, the core test sat at three hours.The length change means there are 44 fewer questions, allowing students “more time to answer each question thoughtfully,” Godwin said. “This change is designed to make the testing experience more manageable for students, enabling them to perform at their best without the fatigue that often accompanies longer exams,” she continued.The Composite and section scores continue to follow the same 1-36 scale but the Composite score will now be the average of the English, reading and math scores.Following the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on education, the class of 2023 had the worst ACT performance in more than three decades.While there is ongoing discourse surrounding the effectiveness of standardized testing, the ACT organization maintains it is focused on transforming “college and career readiness pathways so that everyone can discover and fulfill their potential.”Other changes implemented in the past include the addition of the optional essay section in 2005, the introduction of school-day testing in 2006 and offering an online testing option in 2017.Subscribe to our News 4 newsletter and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
