    Locals compete in FH2A Tennis Tournament

    EAST BEND — East Surry’s Kade Talton and Levi Watson highlighted the Foothills 2A Conference Tournament by repeating as Doubles Champions.

    Watson/Talton defeated Surry Central’s Maddox Martin and Isaac Eller 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match. East Surry is the only FH2A team to win an individual conference championship each of the past three years.

    The Cardinals were also represented in the FH2A Singles Championship as Lupe Chavez finished runner-up. He fell 6-1, 6-2 to North Wilkes’ Mitch Adams – the bracket’s top seed.

    Four singles players and four doubles teams qualified for the 2A Midwest Regional Championship Tournament at Salisbury High School May 3-4. In singles: North Wilkes’ Adams, East Surry’s Chavez and Noah Hopkins, and Forbush’s Isaac Hazen. In doubles: East Surry’s Watson/Talton, Surry Central’s Martin/Eller and Chris Hall/Dalton Quesenberry, and Forbush’s Dodd Martin/Zeke Aguilar.

    East Surry was also recognized at the tournament for winning the FH2A Regular Season Championship with a 12-0 record. Watson was named FH2A Player of the Year, and the Cardinals’ Hal Epperson was named FH2A Coach of the Year.

    Surry Central finished FH2A Runner-up with a 9-3 league record, followed by Forbush and West Wilkes at 7-5, North Wilkes at 5-7, and both North Surry and Wilkes Central at 1-11.
