Man killed in Dickson County hostage standoff after he shot deputy, sheriff says

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the man who shot a deputy in the arm and was then shot and killed by deputies in Dickson County on Friday.

Mark Engele, 52, was killed by Dickson County deputies who had responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Potter Road to conduct a welfare check. After deputies arrived, Engele went into the home and refused to come out or let a woman inside leave, according to the TBI.

During negotiations, a shot was fired from inside the residence, according to the sheriff's department.

Special Operations Response Team personnel then attempted to enter the residence, the sheriff's department said in a news release. More shots were fired and a bullet struck a Dickson County deputy in the arm. The deputy was treated and released, though the bullet remained in his arm, Dickson County Sheriff Tim Eads said.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Engele was killed when he attempted to leave the residence while pointing a gun at deputies, according to the Dickson County Sheriff's Office news release.

Engele died at the scene, Eads said. The woman being held inside the residence was not injured, police said.

TBI special agents are investigating the events leading up to the shooting at the request of District Attorney General Ray Crouch, TBI spokesperson Keli McAlister said.
