Classes may be split. Teachers may be asked to give up their planning periods. Administrators may set aside other responsibilities to cover classrooms. The doors open, but the school day begins under strain.

Let the second season begin. The Tennessee high school football playoff brackets are set and games begin on Nov. 6 with first-round games. We dug into the brackets, projecting the paths of Nashville area high school football teams in their quest to reach the TSSAA championship games Dec. 3-5 at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga. Here is a look at three schools that appear to have an easy path and three programs that have difficult playoff roads ahead of them. Easiest paths in the TSSAA football playoffs Battle Ground Academy It pays to be the No. 1 team in the Division II-AA Middle Region. Bobby Bentley's Wildcats should breeze to the semifinals, where they likely would play Franklin Road Academy (7-3) or Knoxville Grace (9-1). If quarterback Bo Bryan, a recent Georgia commit, is healthy by Nov. 20, that should help BGA go to a second straight championship game. Nashville Christian The two-time defending Division II-A state champions don't have Jared Curtis at quarterback. But Tate Mathis has played well for the Eagles (8-2) in their final year of DII-A before bumping up to DII-AA. Nashville Christian won't face USJ (9-1) or Friendship Christian (8-2) until the championship game. More: Tennessee

The results of those games on Oct. 29 and 30 will determine how the playoff brackets unfold. Here are the top 10 high school football games to keep an eye on this week. Game of the week Oakland (8-1, 5-1 in Region 3-6A) at Riverdale (8-1, 6-0) Time : 7 p.m. | When : Oct. 30 Riverdale can wrap up the Region 3-6A championship outright with a win against Oakland. While Riverdale is the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A in the Tennessee high school football statewide poll, this is still a tough task for the Warriors. Riverdale's shocking regular season win over Oakland in 2023's regular season finale has been met with four straight wins by the Patriots in this series. If Riverdale is going to snap that four-game slide against its rival, this would be the year. Oakland has already suffered a region loss to Smyrna and would love to

In November 2024, while I was serving as vice chair of the Rutherford County Board of Education, our school district experienced a cyberattack that put our systems and sensitive data at risk. We had no choice but to hire an outside cybersecurity firm, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Fortunately, the attack happened during the holidays, allowing our IT team to work around the clock without closing schools. Their dedication ensured students returned from winter break on schedule. That experience opened my eyes to just how vulnerable our schools are and how costly it has become to protect the technology we depend on every day. Schools pay the price for technology dependence Technology is no longer a luxury in education. It is a necessity. Students must develop technology skills, and teachers must adapt to an ever-changing digital world. But all of this comes at a price. School districts spend more taxpayer dollars every year on software, equipment and cybersecurity. What concerns me most is our growing dependence on a single technology provider in a market where competition is limited. With fewer alternatives, schools lose bargaining power and face rising costs, often diverting taxpayer dollars from other educational priorities just
