Tom Izzo harps on MSU fast-break improvements: 'What our stamp is'

EAST LANSING — Tom Izzo has laid down the law with his players coming out of three preseason exhibition games, reinforcing a non-negotiable aspect of how he wants his Michigan State teams to play. And the message is simple: Get defending, rebounding and running for transition offense, or get ready to be disappointed. “So, this week, it's gonna be a little more taxing on what we gotta get out of our defense, what we gotta get out of our rebounding,” Izzo said during a press conference Thursday, Oct. 29. “And then, we are gonna run. And that commitment was made yesterday with meetings I had with players, that were either gonna do it, or we're gonna find some people that want to do it. And so, that's about us.” Coming out of a trio of exhibition games with a pair of losses, Michigan State opens its season on Monday, Nov. 2, at the Breslin Center against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. And if there’s one thing Izzo obviously wants his team to do better coming out of the three preseason tuneups, it’s turning staunch defense and defensive rebounding into a relentless transition offense, to be the engine of MSU’s success as

Spartan Stadium renovation plans evolving; construction could start in '27

EAST LANSING — The ever-evolving plans for significant improvements to Spartan Stadium are close to being finalized, Michigan State athletic director Dan Bartholomae and president Kevin Guskiewicz recently told The News. Exact details of what upgrades and renovations the project — which will focus largely on the east tower of the stadium — will entail, when construction will begin or what it will cost aren't yet being shared publicly. But those details are expected to be finalized and shared in the coming weeks, because the MSU Board of Trustees must approve the final plans before construction can start. Bartholomae said he hopes construction can start early during 2027, following the conclusion of the 2026 football season. "We would have construction activities in the '27 season, the '28 season, and then be open in '29," Bartholomae said. Michigan State has planned massive upgrades to the east tower of Spartan Stadium for many months, and plans have evolved under the tenures of three athletics directors: Alan Haller, who was fired in May 2025 ; J Batt, who was hired in June 2025 and left for the Kentucky AD job in June 2026 ; and Bartholomae, who was hired away from Western Michigan
