DEVOL, Okla. ( KFDX/KJTL ) — As the National Weather Service of Norman investigates multiple tornadoes across Texoma and Oklahoma, five homes and a nearly 75-year-old family barn in Cotton County were devastated by the storms, according to county officials

According to Denver McCullough, his family’s historic barn was significantly damaged in the storms’ paths.

“Got down in the basement, watched as it came across,” McCullough recalled.

Tornadoes ran across the Texoma plains with multiple confirmed near Knox City, Seymour, Iowa Park and Devol, where much damage to homes was reported.

“You say your prayers and hope that it’s not as worse as it could be,” he said.

McCullough, who lives just outside Devol where his family farm sustained damage, said the 75-year-old barn had its roof peeled back and doors taken off their frames.

“This is going on four generations. So that barn was built by my grandfather 74 years ago, and my dad grew up here, and now I’m here,” McCullough said. “So it’s sentimental.”

McCullough said the tornado missed his house about 100 yards, and he knows it could have been worse.

“It won’t be the last time, but you rebuild what you have to and, again, say your prayers,” he said. “I hope it doesn’t happen again.”

So far, five local homes have reported damage, according to Cotton County Commissioner District 3 Milton Honeycutt. He is continuing to survey his district and take record of damage.

“Some of the houses don’t have no roof at all. You can walk in their living room and see that daylight,” McCullough said. “Any FEMA grant that we can get, and that’s what we’re working on right now, is getting family in here that FEMA can help us. You know, help the county, help the people of the county.”

Now, McCullough and his family look to rebuild along with others in Devol.

Honeycutt is now asking those rebuilding to contact him at (940) 642-5020 .

Emergency assistance grants are also available for veterans. Call the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs at (405) 523-4000 for more information on eligibility.
