Things to do (for the Earth) this weekend in Detroit: April 19-21

🌎 Earth Day is Monday, and we have ideas for how to spend the weekend leading up to it!

  • If you're volunteering, make sure to dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes and bring gloves.

🌊 Volunteer to remove trash from the Rouge River at Eliza Howell Park. The items will be cleaned and used in a water pollution-themed installation from local artist Halima Cassells. Sign up online .

  • Saturday, 10am-2pm.

🚶 Join the spring Dequindre Cut cleanup and pick up some litter while walking the former Grand Trunk railroad line. Sign up and check in at the Woodbridge, Lafayette, Gratiot or Wilkins entrance.

  • Saturday, 11am-1pm.

🗣️ Browse sustainable product vendors and join a climate crisis rally in Royal Oak, themed around voting "as though the Earth depends on it."

  • Saturday, 3-7pm.

🛥️ Meet at the Outdoor Adventure Center by the riverfront for a cleanup day along the Detroit River and Milliken State Park. Trash bags and gloves provided. Sign up online .

  • Saturday, 9am-noon.

🌱 At Rouge Park, you've got options — participate in trash pickup at the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Association, and/or help remove invasive plant species from the forest to make way for a natural play area. Sign up online .

  • Sunday, 10am-noon.

🗑️ Help pick up trash across the city with the Keep Detroit Clean campaign. Starting locations are Gompers Elementary-Middle School, Brenda Scott Academy and Mackenzie Elementary-Middle School. Sign up online .

  • Monday, 9am-1pm.

🐟 Visit the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle for a free family day centering around Belle Isle's history, its natural habitats and microplastics pollution.

  • Sunday, 10am-3pm.

🐧 The Detroit Zoo's GreenFest features a sustainable marketplace, live music, environmental activities and animal interactions. Free with regular admission.

  • Saturday and Sunday, 9am-3pm.

🌳 Plant trees, spread mulch and pick up trash in a small Detroit park called Spruce Grove with Arboretum Detroit.

  • Monday, 3-6pm.
