Lions Fan Became Internet Legend While Eating 3-Foot-Tall $250 Sandwich During Win Over Bucs

The Detroit Lions are going to the NFC championship game after a 31–23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s divisional round playoff game. But the players on the field weren’t the only ones in the stadium whose exploits drew admiration.

Early in the second half, a fan was photographed sitting down with an enormously stacked sandwich in the Ford Field stands. Seeing the sandwich might have reminded older fans of the heaping lunches Dagwood fixed for himself in the Blondie comic strip.

The sandwich monstrosity this Lions fan held precariously on his lap seemed like it couldn’t have been real. Yet it must have been something he purchased from the Ford Field concession stands. Nobody could have snuck a sandwich like that into the stadium.

As it turns out, the sandwich was not only spectacular but also very real. Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Taylor DesOrmeau, who initially photographed the sandwich, did some further reporting and found out that the fan with the major appetite is a season ticket holder and gets that huge sandwich at every home game.

However, Grand Rapids Press reporter Audra Gamble eventually uncovered the real answers to this rapidly growing internet legend. The towering sandwich is called the “50-Yard Line Sub Sandwich Bar,” stacks three feet tall, is meant to serve 10-12 people, and is available for $250.

Oh, and it’s served at halftime–probably because it takes the entire first half to assemble the sandwich with four different meats, one cheese, three vegetables, and a choice of nine toppings.

No word on whether or not the fan actually consumed that entire sandwich during the second half and was found napping in the aisle afterward. Or perhaps he asked for a bag to take the rest home–and presumably feed himself for the next week.
