Boxing Results: Claressa Shields Dominates Cornejo!

By Ken Hissner: At the Little Ceasar’s Arena, Detroit, Michigan, Saturday over DAZN before 10,000 in attendance promoter Dmitriy Salita (Salita Promotions) presented in the Main Event 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist and WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO Middleweight champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields Defeating former WBC International Super Middle champ No. 1 ranked Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo fought for the WBA, WBC, WBO, WBF Middleweight titles.

In the Main Event 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist, WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO Middleweight champ Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, 14-0 (2), #159 ½, of Flint, MI, easily defeated late sub former WBC Int’l Super Middle champ No. 1 ranked Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo, 16-6 (6), #155, of Las Vegas, NV, over 10×2 rounds.

In the first two rounds the wild swinging Shields out landed Cornejo. In the third rounds final thirty seconds Shields rocked Cornejo with a right on the chin. In the fourth rounds final seconds Shields landed an overhand right on the chin of Cornejo.

In the seventh rounds final half minute Shields rocked Cornejo with a right on the chin. Cornejo continued showing little offense throughout. In the eighth through the tenth rounds Shields kept throwing and landing the rights with little opposition from Cornejo in pitching a shutout!

2016 Olympic Alternate Super Welter southpaw Ardreal “Bossman” Holmes, Jr., 14-0 (5), #153 ½, of Flint, MI, won a disputed split decision over Wendy “Haitian Fire” Toussaint, 14-2 (6), #149 ¾, of Huntington, NY, when the fight was stopped after 1:54 of the eighth round due to an accidental clash of heads causing a cut on the forehead of Toussaint in a scheduled 10 rounds for the vacant IBF USBA Super Welterweight title.

In the second round Toussaint came back well forcing Holmes into a corner with a combination. In the third round Toussaint in the final minute landed a flurry of punches having Holmes against the ropes.

In the fourth round Referee Gerald White took a point from Toussaint for landing a punch near the back of the head that didn’t seem warranted. Toussaint dominated the remainder of the round. In the sixth round Toussaint outworked Holmes.

In the seventh rounds final minute Toussaint had Holmes in trouble against the ropes with a flurry of punches. In the eighth round a clash of heads caused a nasty cut on the forehead of Toussaint. The ring physician didn’t stop it half a round later but the referee White did for an obvious blunder on his part. They went to the scorecards and the crowd booed the decision in favor of Holmes.

Middle Joseph “Sug” Hicks, Jr., 7-0 (5), #159 ½, of Grand Rapids, MI, defeated Antonio Todd, 14-8-1nc (8), #158 ¼ of Atlanta, GA, for the vacant WBC Americas Silver title, over 8 rounds.

In the first three rounds Hicks outworked Todd. In the fourth rounds final minute Todd rocked Hicks with a right on the chin. Hicks finished landing the final punch a right on the chin of Todd.

From the fifth through the eighth rounds Hicks continued to dominate Todd for a shutout win. Referee was Patrick Smith.

Scores were all 80-72 including KH.

Super Welter Marlon Harrington, 9-1 (8), #152 ¾, of Detroit, MI, stopped Gheith Mohammad Karim, 9-1 (3), #152 ¼, of Iraq and Dearborn, MI, 8 rounds.

Super Light Joshua James Pagan, 7-0 (3), #139 ½, of Grand Rapids, MI, stopped Ronnell “Punisher” Burnett, 9-1 (5), #137 ½, of Kansas City, MO., by technical stoppage in the 6th round.

Feather southpaw Sarah Liegmann, 8-0 (2), #124 ½, of Reinbek, GER, won a majority decision over Carisse Brown, 7-5 (4), #125 ¾, of Lakeland, FL, over 6×2 rounds.
