DETROIT (WWJ) – The search is on for a “criminal group” believed to be connected to two Detroit murders and other recent crimes after a traffic stop led to a barricaded situation Saturday.

Detroit Police Chief James White described the group as “very, very violent” during a press conference outside a home on the city’s west side where one of the men barricaded himself inside while fleeing police.

The group of suspects is believed to be responsible for, or at least knows something, about the following crimes:

• An armed robbery and murder at a coney island restaurant near Joy and Evergreen on Thursday
• A recent murder on W. Chicago near Hubbel Avenue
• A non-fatal shooting on Grand River Avenue near I-96 and Schaefer on May 24
• A recent carjacking on Ohio Street, near Plymouth and Grand River

Detroit police tried to pull over a person of interest Saturday, but they fled and “dumped the vehicle” on Trinity Street, near McNichols and Grand River.

All three suspects ran from the car, according to White. A helicopter pursued two of the suspects, while the other ran into a home on Trinity, causing a married couple and two children to run outside.

Authorities do not believe the suspect knew the family inside the home.

Detroit police surrounded the home for several hours Saturday evening, but after DPD’s Special Response Team entered the home, the suspect was not inside.

Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald told reporters after reviewing surveillance footage from helicopters in the area, police did not believe the suspect left the “heavily wooded area” in the neighborhood.

Fitzgerald described the suspect as a tall, thin Black male in his early or mid-20s. He was wearing “bright white pants” and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Police have not released photos or descriptions of the other two suspects.

Anyone who knows something about the group of suspects should call Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. All Crime Stoppers tipsters will remain anonymous.

Police escorted the family back inside their home late Saturday night.
