The Detroit Red Wings have announced that forward Robby Fabbri will miss the remainder of the regular season.

The 27-year-old forward requires a minor procedure and will be back in time for training camp next year. Fabbri has had a host of injury problems throughout his career and hopefully this procedure will help set him on the right path.

Fabbri played 28 games this year in Detroit, scoring seven goals and 16 points with a -1 rating. The Red Wings had tentative playoff hopes this year and the injury-shortened season for Fabbri hurt Detroit’s forward depth in a big way.

He is in the first year of a $12 million contract he signed with the Red Wings carrying an AAV of $4 million.

The St. Louis Blues selected Fabbri with the 21st overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. He played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm, scoring 80 goals and 171 points in 147 games. In the two years between his draft day and his NHL debut, Fabbri solidified himself as a top NHL prospect.

He had a successful rookie season in 2015-16 with 18 goals and 37 points in 72 games. He also scored 15 points in 20 games during the Blues’ 2016 playoff run, nearly helping them win a Stanley Cup.

The Mississauga, Ontario native followed that up with a solid sophomore season, scoring 29 points in 51 games. But then the injury bug struck him and he ended up missing the entire 2017-18 season with a serious knee injury.

He went on to play only 32 games the next season. Nine games into the ill-fated 2019-20 season, Fabbri was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in a one-for-one deal in exchange for defenseman Jacob De La Rose. Fabbri found his game somewhat in Detroit but was constantly hampered by injuries, just like in St. Louis.

In his career, Fabbri has scored 80 goals and 168 points in 330 games split between the Blues and Red Wings.
