METRO DETROIT PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Indya Davis, G, West Bloomfield
Junior
Davis set the rhythm for the touted West Bloomfield offense this year, leading the Lakes to the Division 1 championship game for the second-straight season before finishing runner-up to Rockford.
This season, she contributed all over the floor while averaging 15.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.6 steals, 1.6 assists and 0.6 blocks. She was also named the Gatorade Michigan Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season for her efforts this season.
“Indya is like a Swiss Army knife,” West Bloomfield coach Darrin McAllister said earlier this season. “She can play anywhere.”
Davis had team highs in points and rebounds with 23 and 12 in the state semifinal win over Salem. She then had eight points, seven rebounds and four steals in the narrow loss to Rockford.
A Michigan State commit, Davis still has one year left alongside twin sister Summer Davis to try and lead West Bloomfield back to the Breslin Center and capture the second championship of their careers.
METRO DETROIT DREAM TEAM
Kennedy Blair, G, Dearborn Divine Child
Senior
Blair has been a force in the Catholic League for a few seasons now and this year she was just a hairs width away from averaging a double-double by collecting 25.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. She scored 46 points in an overtime game against. A Miss Basketball finalist this season, Blair is committed to Bowling Green.
Summer Davis, G, West Bloomfield
Junior
Davis was the leading scorer for West Bloomfield this season, averaging 18.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.9 steals, 3.3 assists and 0.3 blocks for the Lakers this season while shooting 45.8 percent from the field. She was West Bloomfield’s greatest threat from beyond the arc, shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.
Mayla Ham, G, Wayne Memorial
Senior
Ham’s success over the years has had a direct correlation on Wayne’s success as well. The Georgetown signee was a McDonald’s All-American nominee this season and averaged just under a double-double with 19.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. Her departure from the program is going to be tough to recover from but her legacy will be remembered for a long time as she won 60 games with Wayne over the last three seasons.
Madison Morson, G, Salem
Junior
Morson really left no doubt this season that she is one of the most talented and fun to watch players in Michigan. This season, Morson averaged 22.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals while leading Salem to a 21-7 record. She had a season-best of 37 points in a game and even dropped 31 points on West Bloomfield in Salem’s historic appearance the Division 1 semifinals. She shot 49 percent from the field this season as well. Although she has set a high bar for herself going into next season, she’s literally used to clearing high bars as one of the state’s best high jumpers during track season.
Christian Sanders, G, Detroit Renaissance
Junior
Christin Sanders has been to the Breslin Center twice now in her career after guiding the Phoenix to the Division 1 semifinals this year after finishing runner-up as a freshman. This year, she was named Miss PSL and averaged 14.1 points, 3.6 assists, 3.3 steals and 2.6 rebounds leading a team that had four players average double figures. She also shot 42.2 percent from the field.
SECOND TEAM
Aizlyn Albanese, G, Farmington Hills Mercy
Sophomore
Albanese burst onto the scene this year by becoming one of the top players in the area and one of the top sophomores in the state. She scored 45 points in a win over Divine Child this season and averaged 17 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.0 steals.
Annabel Ayrault, G, Grosse Pointe North
Senior
Ayrault is the definition of perseverance. Despite a dislocated kneecap and a partially torn ligament that forced her to miss three weeks during the season, she returned and led a heck of a playoff charge to the Division 1 quarterfinals that saw her average 14.2 points, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals.
Sydney Hendrix, F, West Bloomfield
Senior
Hedrix’s leadership was quite possibly the most crucial thing she brought to the table this year for a talented West Bloomfield squad. However, se still averaged 11.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 1.4 assists and 0.3 blocks and stepped up her game in the tournament.
Elyssa Kincaid, F, Riverview
Senior
Kincaid was a big reason when Riverview was 43-9 over the last two seasons and helped the Pirates make it to the Division 1 quarterfinals this year that saw them narrowly lose to Salem. She averaged 17.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 3.2 assists.
Shamya Reid, G, Redford Westfield Prep
Senior
Reid has helped put Westfield Prep on the map and really left her mark as Westfield Prep beat Detroit Edison in the region finals. This season, she averaged 15.6 points, five steals and five assists.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Rod Wells, Salem
In just two seasons, Wells took a team that went 2-15 the season before his arrival to the Breslin Center berth in the Division 1 semifinals this season. Salem went 21-7 and won the KLAA title while making it to the semifinals for the first time since 1990. Wells did it by developing a group of players that were around for the struggles in the 2020-21 season and got the most out of every girl that stepped on the court.
