Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis feels 'cheated' out of NCAA scoring record

Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis said recently that he feels "cheated" out of the opportunity to break "Pistol" Pete Maravich's NCAA scoring record.

Davis fell just four points short of breaking Maravich's all-time Division I scoring mark (3,667 points) when Detroit Mercy lost to Youngstown State in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament in early March.

Earlier this month, the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) didn't send an invitation to the Titans, which seemingly put an end to Davis' final chance at passing the NBA Hall of Famer. There appeared to be a glimmer of hope for the 24-year-old with the inaugural College Hoops Postseason 8 event, but Davis' college career is now officially over.

"I'm upset about it," he said, per an Associated Press and ESPN report. "I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can't ever give back to me. I think it's selfish -- and weird -- that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn't be in the tournament because they didn't want me to break the record."

Davis added that he had "nothing to hold my head down about," however, and he still feels like he's "the best scorer in my generation, especially finishing No. 2 behind him."

The CBI began on Saturday and will have its championship on Wednesday. The four remaining teams are Charlotte, Southern Utah, Eastern Kentucky and Radford.

The invitational reportedly had talks with Detroit Mercy about a potential invitation, but ultimately, with a 14-19 record, the Titans were left out of the 16-team field.

"We did receive unsolicited emails and voicemails about Detroit Mercy and some said we don't ever want Pete Maravich's record broken," Rick Giles, president of the Gazelle Group that runs the CBI, said. "The decision we made wasn't based purely on whether we wanted him to break the record or not."

According to the report, teams who are invited to compete in the CBI pay $27,500 to play in the tournament.
