Twentynine Palms Marines to Help Clean Up DHS

Twentynine Palms Marines will pick up trash, sweep sidewalks, more

DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Soldiers from the Twentynine Palms Marine Base will help the Desert Hot Springs Beautification Committee cleanup a local high school on Saturday, March 25.

Marines from the base will arrive at Desert Hot Springs High School starting at 8 a.m. to pick up trash, sweep sidewalks, rake leaves, and remove rubbish from the school campus and its perimeter.

“We are so excited that the Marines have stepped up to the plate to help the schools in our community,” said James Nindel, co-chair of the DHS Beautification Committee. This is the second school the Marines have helped out in our community — Two Bunch Palms Elementary School was the first school.

Desert Hot Springs High School has a Junior ROTC program, and the Marines are looking forward to interacting with the students from that program.

Base Academic Director Daniel W. Belew, who is also a Space & Propagation Engineering Officer said, “This gives the JROTC students a chance to talk to some Marines that have recently completed Boot Camp and are training in a very technologically advanced Primary MOS (job skill). Most JROTC and Poolees only ever hear about infantry, artillery, etc.”

The Marines and high school students, parents, teachers, and volunteers will start work at 8:00 a.m. The public is invited to come and work alongside the Marines. Desert Hot Springs Mayor Scott Matas will be there along with other city leaders. Refreshments will be provided.

This is the second round of school cleanups. The first school cleanup took place at Painted Hills Middle School and Bella Vista Elementary in November 2022.
