The Denver Broncos have been more active in free agency than in some time, having made multiple moves early in the 'legal tampering' period.

I'm going to examine the contract breakdown for each player as the details are revealed. Let's look at the two-year deal the Broncos gave to cornerback Tremon Smith.

Contract Details

Summary: Two years, $5M, $2.5M fully guaranteed.

Breakdown

  • 2023: $1.4M signing bonus, $1.1M base salary (fully guaranteed).
  • 2024: $1.99M base salary, $510K per-game roster bonus.

Cap Charges: $1.8M in 2023, $3.2M in 2024.

Gut Reaction

This is a typical two-year deal given to a depth player in which the team isn't committed to anything beyond the first year of the deal. While Smith did get half the contract fully guaranteed, the Broncos have a clear out in 2024 if things don't work as expected. Denver can easily cut him next year to gain cap relief.

Smith does have experience as a kick returner, and one would expect he'll compete for those duties. Whether he gets the punt return duties remains to be seen.

I think the Broncos did a good job with this contract, and if Smith proves valuable in the return game, this has the potential to be a value signing.

Contract Grade: B+
