A Denton man reported Monday that someone stole $21,000 worth of frequent flyer miles from his airline account, according to a police report.
Denton police took the man’s report over the phone. He said he noticed his miles were gone after he logged in to the airline’s app.
The report states that 730,500 miles, with a value over $21,000, were gone. He said the airline informed him that he needed to file a police report before they could work to refund him.
The flights were booked under numerous different names, according to the report. Police spokesperson Allison Beckwith said it doesn’t appear from the report that he is connected to any of the people. Beckwith said the report did not specify the destinations for the flights.
Police are still investigating the incident. The incident was listed as theft of service in the media report, but Beckwith said it was coded as fraudulent use or possession of identifying information in the department’s records management system. She said it was possible the charge could change as the investigation continues.
Depending on where the flights were booked to, Beckwith said it’s possible other law enforcement agencies or the FBI could become involved in the investigation.
