Sheriff’s Corner: Deputy’s act of bravery earns recognition
The Denton Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F) Lodge #82 awarded Deputy Preston Dunlap as the Officer of the Year. Deputy Dunlap started his law enforcement career at the Denton County Sheriff’s Office in the Detention section in August 2017. He applied for the patrol section and started his patrol career in February 2021. Deputy Dunlap is dependable and proudly serves the citizens of Denton County with a positive attitude daily.

Through the first five weeks of the season, the Lake Dallas football team had won every game by at least 28 points. However, the Falcons had a much bigger test Friday against Frisco Memorial. The Warriors gave the Falcons all they could handle. But, Lake Dallas showed that it can handle the pressure of a close game, surviving one last gasp by Memorial to earn a 40-37 win and improve to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in District 3-5A Division II.
Denton County suffered sizzling September
September in North Texas took the phrase “Endless Summer” seriously. Unofficially, this September was the second hottest on record. Our day-night average temperature was 84.6 degrees. Only September 2019 was hotter with an average temperature of 85.5. DFW set a new record of 8 days at or above 100 degrees last month. The hottest temperature during the month was 110 degrees on Sept. 8. During the entire summer, we endured 55 days at or above 100 degrees, which was 4th behind the summers of 2011, 1980 and 1998.
Denton County is adding another grand jury: What it means and how it could speed up cases
In addition to the weekly Thursday grand jury, Denton County will also hold a weekly grand jury on Tuesdays starting Oct. 3. A second grand jury is intended to have a significant effect on how quickly cases move through the county’s courts, how long inmates spend in jail and how much the county spends on inmates.

Denton county man sentenced to federal prison for child pornography violations
THE COLONY, Texas — A 49-year-old man from Denton County has been sentenced to federal prison for distributing child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs. James Buck Briggs, of The Colony, Texas, pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing child pornography and was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant.

James Buck Briggs, a 49-year-old resident of The Colony, was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in federal prison for two counts of distributing child pornography. In December 2021, an undercover officer encountered Briggs in an online chatroom dedicated to child sexual abuse, according to a press release from the Eastern District Court of Texas.
